New regulations may help protect Thai domestic workers

A draft of a ministerial regulation on the protection of domestic workers in Thailand, is expected to be completed on Sept 23, to be sent to the cabinet for consideration and approval this year. The minimum wage, day leave, access to medical treatment and education, and other requirements would be specified in the ministerial regulation. This regulation is important since the 1998 Labour Protection Act does not cover domestic workers, but UFDWR's concern is that it will only cover Thai nationals and not the thousands of foreign and undocumented domestic workers in Thailand.
